Adapted from Five-spice Lamb in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/1000-Recipe-Cookbook-collection-photographs\/dp\/075481596X\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1244530385&amp;sr=1-3\" target=\"_blank\">1000 Recipes by Martha Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1 pound ground beef<br \/>\n1 onion, chopped<br \/>\n1 cup tomatoes, chopped<br \/>\n1 cup beef stock<br \/>\n2 Tbsp hoisin sauce<br \/>\n1 Tbsp soy sauce<br \/>\n1 Tbsp ginger root, minced<br \/>\n1 clove of garlic, minced<br \/>\n1 tsp <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Five-spice_powder\" target=\"_blank\">five-spice powder<\/a><br \/>\nsalt and pepper to taste<br \/>\n1 cup of chopped vegetables (optional)<br \/>\n1\/4 cup to 1\/2 cup cilantro, chopped (optional)<br \/>\n1 dollop of tahini paste (optional)<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 325.<\/p>\n<p>Brown beef in a large skillet. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Maintain the grease in the pan to saute onions, garlic and ginger root. Cook on medium-high heat until onions turn translucent or even golden.<\/p>\n<p>Add the meat back to the pan, as well as tomatoes, stock, hoisin, soy sauce, and five-spice. Mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer to a casserole dish and bake, <strong>covered<\/strong>, for 60 minutes. If you&#8217;re using the optional vegetables, bake for 45 minutes, stir in vegetables, then bake for another 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Stir in cilantro and tahini just before serving.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The original recipe calls for minced lamb and lamb stock, as well as toasted sesame seeds instead of tahini.<\/p>\n<p>I skipped the vegetables and served this (with a full 1\/2 cup of cilantro) as a bolognese sauce on top of <a href=\"http:\/\/elise.com\/recipes\/archives\/000040spanish_rice.php\" target=\"_blank\">Elise&#8217;s Spanish rice<\/a>. I think it would have tasted great on top of soba noodles&#8230; maybe next time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sweet, salty and flavorful minced meat sauce or casserole (just add vegetables).
